About the song:

In 1970, “The Fightin 'Side of Me” was nominated for Song of the Year and Single of the Year by the Country Music Association. The song did not win either award, with it losing the Single award to “Okie from Muskogee ".

“The Fightin 'Side of Me” proved to be a successful follow-up single to “Okie From Muskogee” Both took a turn topping the Hot Country Singles chart. Together, they expanded Haggard's public image. Beforehand, “I" ma Lonesome Fugitive “and” Mama Tried “created a proto-outlaw image of sorts for the singer. Within the next two years, you'd become an unlikely and successful part of the music industry's running commentary on war, making him a forerunner for the boldly patriotic Charlie Daniels Band. Nowadays it's another artistically-rewarding step between Haggard helping Buck Owens craft the Bakersfield sound and earning his deserved status as the legend behind some of country music's biggest hits.

Merle Haggard - The Fightin Side Of Me Lyrics

[Verse 1]

I hear people talking bad

About the way they have to live here in this country

Harping on the wars we fight

And griping 'bout the way things ought to be

And I don't mind them switching sides

And standing up for things they believe in

But when they're running down our country, man

They're walking on the fighting side of me

[Chorus]

They're walking on the fighting side of me

Running down a way of life

Our fighting men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it

Let this song that I'm singing be a warning

When you're running down our country, hoss

You're walking on the fighting side of me

[Verse 2]

I read about some squirrely guy

Who claims that he just don't believe in fighting

And I wonder just how long

The rest of us can count on being free

They love our milk and honey

But they preach about some other way of living

When they're running down our country, man

They're walking on the fighting side of me

[Chorus]

They're walking on the fighting side of me

Running down a way of life

Our fighting men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it

Let this song that I'm singing be a warning

When you're running down our country, man

You're walking on the fighting side of me

You're walking on the fighting side of me

Running down a way of life

Our fighting men have fought and died to keep

If you don't love it, leave it

Let this song that I'm singing be a warning

When you're running down our country, hoss

You're walking on the fighting side of me
