About the song:

30 years ago, an infamous murder took place on the most popular street in Nashville. As a story of fame and lies is revealed, many residents have never heard what really happened on that fateful day. It was not until ten years after the story was put into a song with a completely different meaning.

A mysterious murder

Recall the spring of 1989 when two young men were trapped in the wrong place at the wrong time: Music Row. A young Kevin Hughes and his friend Sammy Sadler were leaving a recording studio on March 6 when an armed man armed with a ski mask and dark clothes opened fire on them.

When Hughes, 23, was shot three times, he tried to flee the scene that ended with a deadly shot in the back of the head. Sadler, 21, was shot in the shoulder and, although seriously injured, managed to get safe. The attacker quickly escaped the crime scene on 16th Avenue without anyone obtaining a description or evidence good enough to find his whereabouts.

What is music row:

Music Row is an area in downtown Nashville that has hundreds of country music recording studios and related businesses. Music Row is considered the heart of Nashville in the entertainment industry. Roy Acuff, the first “king of the country” was one of the founders of Music Row. He co-founded the first major country music publisher based in Nashville, Acuff-Rose Music. (Erlewine, “Roy Acuff Bio | Roy Acuff Career”) Acuff brought large amounts of success to the area. This achievement showed that country music could survive on its own and was popular enough to exist separately from the music industry, located in New York and Los Angeles. The lyrics of “Murder was cometed on Music Row” symbolize the death of traditional country music in the place that has historically produced the majority of country artists and songs throughout the industry. Music Row was founded as a point of pride for country music, so singing about the death of this genre at its birthplace is especially powerful. However, everything evolves, things change and also Music Row.

George Strait & Alan Jackson - Murder on The Music Row

[Verse 1: George Strait]

Nobody saw him runnin'

From sixteenth avenue

They never found the fingerprint

Or the weapon that was used

But someone killed country music

Cut out its heart and soul

They got away with murder

Down on music row

[Verse 2: Alan Jackson]

The almighty dollar

And the lust for worldwide fame

Slowly killed tradition

And for that someone should hang (oh, you tell them Alan)

They all say "Not Guilty!"

But the evidence will show

That murder was committed

Down on music row

[Chorus: Both]

For the steel guitars no longer cry

And the fiddles barely play

But drums and rock 'n' roll guitars

Are mixed up in your face

Ol' Hank wouldn't have a chance

On today's radio

Since they committed murder

Down on music row

[Verse 3: George Strait]

They thought no one would miss it

Once it was dead and gone

They said no one would buy them ol'

Drinking and cheating songs (I'll still buy'em)

Well there ain't no justice in it

And the hard facts are cold

Murder's been committed

Down on music row

[Chorus: Both]

Oh, the steel guitars no longer cry

And you can't hear fiddles play

With drums and rock 'n roll guitars

Mixed right up in your face

Why, the Hag, he wouldn't have a chance

On today's radio

Since they committed murder

Down on music row

[Outro: Both]

Why, they even tell the Possum

To pack up and go back home

There's been an awful murder

Down on music row
